Après la découverte du Pays Basque lors d’un voyage à travers la France et l’Espagne en 1799 et 1800, Wilhelm von Humboldt décide d’y retourner l’année suivante pour un deuxième séjour plus exploratoire, afin d’étudier la région et ses habitants sous tous les angles. Alors que ses premiers travaux consacrés à des langues ou des cultures étrangères concernaient majoritairement la Grèce antique, connue uniquement à travers les livres, il cherche cette fois-ci à mettre en relation, sur le terrain, géographie et histoire, constitutions politiques, mœurs, pratiques linguistiques et artistiques. Le récit de ce voyage a été considéré comme un jalon important dans le développement de l’anthropologie humboldtienne. Cette étude d’une « tribu », d’un « peuple » ou d’un « caractère national », pour reprendre des notions mobilisées par Humboldt, permet tout particulièrement de réfléchir à l’anthropologie culturelle dans sa relation à l’histoire, à la philosophie politique et à l’esthétique.

La Chine a une très riche tradition en phonologie (l’emploi de ce terme étant anachronique). Les courants phonologiques dits « occidentaux » peinent à s’imposer face à cette tradition philologique chinoise, d’où la question de la commensurabilité. Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dans une tension entre deux traditions. Plutôt que de trancher en faveur de l’une ou de l’autre, il s’efforce d’abord, dans une première partie consacrée aux questions épistémologiques, de comprendre cette opposition entre une méthode sui generis et méthode universaliste. Si la tradition philologique chinoise insiste sur les particularités de la langue chinoise, ignorant souvent les universaux linguistiques par ethnocentrisme, elle n’a pas totalement tort de critiquer certaines applications aveugles des théories phonologiques au chinois. Toutefois, ces critiques ne doivent pas conduire à l’abandon de la recherche des universaux, c’est l’outil théorique qu’il convient de réviser. C’est donc dans la seconde partie de l’ouvrage qu’est proposée une analyse de la phonologie du chinois en tant que système, dans un cadre théorique appelé CVCV. Cette partie commence par un chapitre introductif au modèle, destiné aux lecteurs qui ne lui sont pas familiers, puis décline, chapitre par chapitre, les phénomènes allant des unités plus petites (segments/ton) aux unités plus grandes (morphème/mot), qui montre qu’une phonologie générale peut traiter efficacement le chinois.

The book offers a modern analysis of the transcription systems employed by Wilhelm Radloff in his seminal 19th-century works on Turkic languages: Proben der Volksliteratur der türkischen Stämme Süd-Sibiriens (1866–1907), Phonetik der nördlichen Türksprachen (1883), and Versuch eines Wörterbuches der Türk-Dialecte (1893–1911). Data are arranged in dictionary form, with detailed commentary demonstrating correspondences between characters and analysing Radloff’s pronunciation clues, including articulatory descriptions and cross-linguistic comparisons. Each character receives an interpretation in contemporary IPA transcription based on careful consideration of Radloff’s views on phonetics in the broader context of the development of linguistic theory.
