The essays collected in this volume engage in a conversation among lexicography, the culture of the book, and the canonization and commemoration of English literary figures and their works in the long eighteenth century. The source of inspiration for each piece is Allen Reddick’s scholarship on Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), the great English lexicographer whose Dictionary (1755) included thousands upon thousands of illustrative quotations from the “best” authors, and, more recently, on Thomas Hollis (1720-1774), the much less well-known bibliophile who sent gifts of books by a pantheon of Whig authors to individuals and libraries in Britain, Protestant bastions in continental Europe, and America. Between the covers of Words, Books, Images readers will encounter canonical English authors of prose and poetry—Bacon, Milton, Defoe, Dryden, Pope, Richardson, Swift, Byron, Mary Shelley, and Edward Lear. But they will also become acquainted with the agents of their canonization and commemoration—the printers and publishers of Grub Street, the biographer John Aubrey, the lexicographer and biographer Johnson, the bibliophile Hollis, and the portrait painter Reynolds. No less crucially, they will meet fellow readers of then and now—women and men who peruse, poach, snip, and savour a book’s every word and image.

Im Zentrum dieses Teils der baskischen Schriften Wilhelm von Humboldts steht die Frage nach dem Verhältnis des Baskischen zum Iberischen, Keltiberischen und anderen Sprachen des vorrömischen Europa.
Die neue Edition der Schriften zur Sprachwissenschaft Wilhelm von Humboldts zielt darauf ab, die erst in den 1990er Jahren wiederentdeckten, verschollen geglaubten Nachlasspapiere Wilhelm von Humboldts zu edieren. Das Baskische war für viele Jahre ein wichtiger Forschungsgegenstand Humboldts. Die erste große Beschäftigung mit einer nicht-indogermanischen Sprache und die Kontakte mit frühen baskischen Grammatikern, Literaten und Intellektuellen führte dazu, retrospektiv diese Episode seines Lebens als die der Herausbildung sprachwissenschaftlichen Denkens zu bezeichnen. Er plante ein großes dreibändiges Baskenwerk. Der nun vorgelegte dritte Band rekonstruiert die Genese seiner einschlägig sehr intensiv rezipierten und diskutierten Schrift zur Stellung des Baskischen im vorrömischen Spanien und im alten Europa.

La sémiotique possède un statut épistémologique difficile à cerner. Ses objets d’étude (produits culturels, pratiques sociales, techniques, milieux du vivant) débordent très largement le cloisonnement des terrains ordinairement admis, y compris parmi les sciences humaines ; et le champ d’expérience qu’elle recoupe est si diversifié qu’il empêche toute unification théorique. Cette double hétérogénéité – des objets d’étude et des moyens d’analyse – fait douter que la sémiotique puisse être constituée en discipline de savoir. Mais si la sémiotique n’est pas une discipline, quel est son statut ?
L’ouvrage s’efforce de répondre à cette question en prenant au sérieux les problèmes épistémologiques que pose son cas. Il adopte ainsi un mouvement de va-et-vient entre l’exposition d’une pratique discursive du savoir et la réflexion sur les moyens nécessaires à son examen.
Sont successivement analysées l’organisation interne (disciplinaire, interdis-ciplinaire) du savoir sémiotique, sa participation à l’organisation générale des connaissances, l’histoire et le programme de recherche, les outils techniques, les gestes discursifs de l’argumentation, enfin les formes de l’objectivité.

L’usage, longtemps déprécié, constitue actuellement le socle des approches linguistiques les plus contemporaines. Le parler ordinaire, c’est-à-dire ce que nous dirions dans telle ou telle circonstance, a traditionnellement été peu considéré par de nombreux théoriciens des langues.
