Une question de sémiotique depuis 2 500 ans tourmente les philosophes : Est-ce la chose qui reçoit un nom ou le nom qui fait la chose ? Tant d’encre a coulé sur ce sujet qu’on en viendrait à désespérer. Il est pour¬tant un domaine, à la fois si proche et si lointain, qu’on appelait il n’y a guère « l’autre Europe », où le nom des langues défie toute nomenclature. Du moins pour ceux qui ne connaissent du rapport entre langue et nation que la définition jacobine.
Mais il y a plus encore : c’est bien la question de base de la linguistique générale qui risque d’être ici malmenée : Qu’est-ce qu’une langue ? Quelles en sont les li¬mi¬tes ? L’ukrainien est-il un dialecte méridional du russe (la partie) ou une langue à part entière (un autre tout) ? Mais le ruthène est-il ou non de l’ukrainien ? En quoi le moldave ne serait-il pas du roumain ? Le serbe et le croate sont-ils deux langues différentes ou bien la même langue ? Si la langue grecque porte deux noms, est-elle une ou double ? Mais la question est-elle correctement posée ?
